Meeting Zola

One thing that any British football fan will know about Sardinia is that the legendary former Italian international footballer and ex-Chelsea player Gianfranco Zola is from the island. I mentioned him briefly in one of my earlier posts when I wrote about my first visits to the small stadium where Nuorese Calcio play. He actually comes from Oliena, a small town which is only about six miles from Nuoro where we live and his first ever professional contract was with Nuorese who were a team of part-timers at the time. It's almost impossible to find anyone in Nuoro or Oliena who doesn't know someone who knows Gianfranco or one of his relatives. Being a bit of a football fan myself, despite coming from Bristol (the least successful footballing city in England relative to size), I've often wondered if I'd ever get to meet him and last weekend I fnally got to meet one of the most admired and popular foreign players to grace the Premier League.

The meeting came about as the result of the fact that I've joined a local band Optimistic Sound as a singer and one of our guitarists, Sandro Moncelsi,  was one of the directors of Nuorese Calcio Football Club while Gianfranco Zola was a young player there. He got to know him quite well and the two have remained in contact ever since. Last Saturday night we did a gig in Porto Ottiolu and stayed overnight, and most of Sunday, in the vicinity. While a few of us were having breakfast together on Sunday morning Sandro said to me (in Italian) something like, "do you want to come with me Geoff? I've got something a bit special on this morning." "Sure!" I replied and about forty-five minutes later we found ourselves outside a lovely house, but not the slightest bit ostentatious, about half an hour's drive from where we were staying.

Sure enough it was the Sardinian home of Gianfranco Zola and he came out to talk to us for about ten minutes before we were on our way again. In that short time he came over as the exceptionally nice man everyone says he is, someone who has never forgotten his roots and has never let his success go to his head. He even sympathised with me about the sorry state of Bristol football! (I don't expect he realised that Julian Dicks, the former West Ham defender, was originally from Bristol when he turned him inside out while playing for Chelsea against West Ham in the late nineties! Il mio incontro con Zola

Una cosa che un tifoso britannico di calcio sa della Sardegna è il fatto che il mitico ex calciatore di Chelsea, Gianfranco Zola, è dell'isola. L'ho menzionato brevemente quando ho scritto il blogpost First Visits to the Nuorese Football Stadium, lo stadio dove gioca Nuorese Calcio. Lui è di Oliena, un paese a circa undici chilometri da Nuoro e il suo primo contratto professionista era con la Nuorese, una squadra di professionisti part-time in quel periodo. E' quasi impossibile trovare qualcuno a Nuoro o Oliena che non conosce qualcuno che conosce Gianfranco o uno dei suoi parenti. Sono un appassionato di calcio benchè sia di Bristol (una delle grandi città inglesi con il meno successo calcistico) e mi sono chiesto se un giorno lo avrei incontrato. Finalmente il weekend scorso ho conosciuto uno dei giocatori stranieri più popolari e più ammirati che ha giocato nella Premier League.

L'incontro è stato grazie al fatto che faccio parte del gruppo nuorese Optimistic Sound come cantante. Uno dei nostri chitarristi, Sandro Moncelsi, è stato un dirigente della Nuorese Calcio quando Gianfranco era un giocatore giovane in questa squadra. Si conoscono bene e sono rimasti in contatto. Sabato scorso abbiamo fatto un concerto la sera a Porto Ottiolu ed abbiamo dormito la notte in una casetta vicina. Mentre facevamo la colazione la domenica mattina Sandro mi ha chiesto: "Vuoi venire con me stamattina? Ho una commissione particolare da fare." "Si," ho risposto e circa quarantacinque minuti dopo eravamo davanti a una villa, bellissima ma non sfarzosa. Ci voleva circa trenta minuti in macchina.

Era la casa in Sardegna di Gianfranco Zola e lui ha parlato con noi in terrazza per circa dieci minuti. In questi pochi minuti mi sembrava l'uomo simpatico come tutti dicono, un uomo che non ha dimenticato le sue radici e non fa il vanitoso per niente. Lui aveva anche un pò di simpatia per la situazione terribile di calcio a Bristol! (Probabilmente non si è reso conto che Julian Dicks, ex difensore di West Ham, era Bristoliano quando l'ha preso in giro mentre giocava per il Chelsea contro il West Ham negli anni novanta.
