My Sardinian Wedding

Well, after nearly four years of me being resident in Nuoro, Maria Rita and I finally tied the knot and we got married on Saturday 31st August. It was an extraordinary day that went off better than we could have ever dreamed of. All those months of careful planning proved worthwhile as none of the things we feared might go wrong actually happened.

The day started early as the ceremony at the 'Comune' (town hall) was at 11 AM and there was plenty planned beforehand. In Sardinia it's the custom for all the guests to be received at the home of the bride beforehand and served with wine, coffee and various kinds of locally produced sweets or small cakes. People started to arrive a bit before 10 AM and before long everyone that we were expecting had arrived. Then, a few minutes before the ceremony was due to take place, our convoy of cars set off for the 'Comune' which is only about a five-minute journey from our apartment by car. The ceremony was so quick, all done within 15 minutes, that it rather surprised our British guests. A great cheer went up when we were declared man and wife and we all went outside for photos before making our way, again in a convoy of vehicles of course, to the reception at the Marina Beach Hotel in Orosei.

When we arrived at Marina Beach Hotel we were greeted by two of the hotel staff, dressed in traditional Sardinian costume, a young woman and a young man, who each broke a plate in the customary way of celebrating a Sardinian wedding and then took us to a bar beside the swimming pool for the aperitivos.

It was a beautiful day and, while we were all sitting outside drinking cocktails beside the hotel swimming pool, it started to feel a bit surreal - as if we were taking part in a film!

After a while we moved inside into the large dining-hall and functions room for the nine-course, yes, nine-course meal! However, it must be said that not all courses were full dishes - sorbetto, wedding cake and coffee with digestivos were all listed on the menu as seperate courses.

I must confess, I took to eating the pasta with such relish (only the third course on the menu) that, after that, my stomach was struggling to find space for all the other delicious things that came afterwards. However, I did try to taste as much as I could even if I left rather a lot on my plate at times. I must say that the service was excellent, very quick indeed. Along with the wedding cake there were two smaller cakes with a design of the Italian national flag on one and the Union Jack on the other. That was more Maria Rita's idea than mine but I must say that the result was pretty spectacular, and tasty!

Early evening, and the musical entertainment began. We had decided beforehand that we didn't really want a traditional wedding band and, knowing what the musical tastes of a large proportion of the guests were, both British and Italian, we booked our friends Alessandro Cadoni and Manuela Azara to play for us. Alessandro fronts the Nuoro based Bluemotion Rock Blues Band, who include a number of Hendrix and Clapton covers amongst their repertoire. Having said that, he and Manuela played a very broad-based set that went on for several hours and went down well with everybody there. They didn't stop playing until midnight when there were only about a dozen of us still around, mainly those of us staying overnight at the hotel!

They did find time to allow me to sing a few songs with my brother-in-law Mariano Selenu playing acoustic guitar.

And there was also time for one of the guests, Davide Peddio, to play some traditional Sardinian music on the accordion. This gave the many Sardinians present a chance to practise some of their traditional dances while a number of our British guests took the opportunity to join in and have a go.

Towards the end of the evening, with the numbers dwindling as the guests started to return home or back to wherever they were staying, we enjoyed some of the fresh night-time air just outside by the pool. What a day! One that will be etched in our memories, and hopefully in the memories of all our guests, for the rest of our lives. It was simply fantastic! Along with a number of family members, and a few others, we stayed overnight at the Marina Beach Hotel but with the adrenalin running so high it was very difficult for us to get much sleep!

Sono residente a Nuoro da quasi quattro anni e finalmente ci siamo sposati, io e Maria Rita, il sabato 31 Agosto. E' stata una giornata straordinaria e tutto è andato meglio di quello che potevamo sognare. Tutti quei mesi a pianificare con molta attenzione sono valsi davvero la pena.

Il giorno è iniziato prestissimo perchè la cerimonia al comune è stata alle undici del mattino e c'era un bel programma da fare prima. In Sardegna c'è la tradizione di invitare gli ospiti in casa della sposa per bere il vino, il caffè e mangiare i dolci. La gente ha cominciato ad arrivare un pò prima delle dieci e poco tempo dopo tutti sono arrivati. Poi, pochi minuti prima delle undici, un convoglio di macchine è andato al comune, solo una distanza di dieci minuti in macchina. La cerimonia era cosi veloce, quindici minuti e tutto era finito, che i nostri ospiti brittanici erano un pò sorpresi. C'erano acclamazioni dopo la dichiarazione che eravamo marito e moglie e siamo usciti dalla palazzo per le foto fuori. Poi, lo stesso convoglio di macchine è andato verso Marina Beach Horel a Orosei per il ricevimento.

Quando siami arrivati a Marina Beach Hotel due giovanni camerieri dell'albergo, vestiti in costume sardo, ci hanno salutato. Tutti e due hanno rotto un piatto davanti a noi, un modo tradizionale di festeggiare un matrimonio sardo. Poi ci hanno portato verso il bar accanto alla piscina per gli aperitivi.

E' stata una bellisima giornata e, mentre tutti noi ci siamo seduti all'aperto a bordo piscina, la situazione sembrava piuttosto surreale, come fossimo in un film! Dopo un pò siamo entrati in sala per il ricevimento per un pasto di nove, si, nove portate! Però, è stato vero che il sorbetto, la torta degli sposi ed il caffè con i digestivi erano scritti sul menu come piatti diversi.

Devo ammettere che ho mangiato la pasta con cosi tanto entusiasmo che, dopo quella, il mio stomaco non aveva molto spazio per le altre cose gustose che sono arrivate dopo. Però, ho provato ad assaggiare quello che potevo anche se lasciavo un pò troppo sul mio piatto ogni tanto. Il servizio era ottimo e molto veloce. Accanto alla torta di matrimonio c'erano due torte più piccole, una con il disegno della bandiera italiana e l'altra con il disegno dell'Union Jack. Era più l'idea di Maria Rita ma il risultato era piùttosto spettacolare e gustoso!

La sera ed il divertimento musicale è iniziato. Prima, avevamo deciso che non volevamo il genere del gruppo musicale tradizionale al nostro matrimonio. Conoscendo i gusti musicali di una grande parte degli ospiti, avevamo contattato i nostri amici Alessandro Cadoni e Manuela Azara. Alessandro è cantante e chitarrista con il gruppo di Nuoro, The Blue Motion Rock Blues Band, che suona molte cover di Hendrix e Clapton. Tuttavia, lui e Manuela hanno suonato una grande varietà di musica per molte ore e a tutti è piaciuto. Non hanno smesso di suonare fino a mezzanotte quando eravamo circa solo in dodici, noi che restavamo in albergo per la notte!

Potevo cantare alcune canzoni con mio cognato Mariano suonando la chitarra acustica ed uno dei nostri ospiti, Davide Peddio, ha suonato la musica sarda con la fisarmonica. Gli ospiti sardi potevano ballare i loro balli tradizionali mentre gli ospiti Brittanici hanno provato a participare.

Verso la fine della serata, dopo che molti ospiti sono tornati a casa o ai loro alberghi, siamo andati fuori per goderci l'aria fresca vicino alla piscina. Che giornata! Una giornata che resterà stampata nelle nostre memorie e, speriamo, in quelle dei nostri ospiti per il resto della vita. E' stato semplicamente fantastico. Noi sposi, qualche persona della famiglia ed alcuni altri ospiti siamo rimasti la notte a Marina Beach Hotel ma per me il sonno era difficile a cause dell'adrenalina!
