Line Drawings of Nuoro Buildings

One of my New Year’s Resolutions at the beginning of this year was to complete ten line drawings of the more interesting buldings in Nuoro by the end of 2012. Earlier this week I completed the first drawing, “La Cattedrale di Santa Maria della Neve”, (below) and it took me rather longer than I was hoping! So perhaps I’ll have to be a little less ambitious in choosing which other buildings to draw.

Strangely enough, I completed it just as Nuoro, and Sardinia, was getting over the coldest spell of winter weather it had experienced in about 50 years. At the same time my home town of Bristol was experiencing daily temperatures of between 6 and 11 degrees! (La Cattedrale di Santa Maria della Neve means "Santa Maria Cathedral in the Snow" in English and below is a recent photo of just that).

 

The idea for doing these drawings had its roots in something I decided to do one bright Spring day about eighteen months before I came to live in Nuoro. I went out and took photos of some of the more interesting buildings in the Henbury and Brentry area of North Bristol where I grew up, partly inspired by the fact that Henbury had started to develop a reputation as an area that has problems with anti-social behaviour despite the fact that the part of Henbury around Blaise Castle Estate is as aesthetically attractive as almost anywhere in Bristol. I suppose I wanted to show that the area has something to offer apart from negative headlines in the local newspapers. (Below, a line drawing of Blaise Castle House and Museum).

  Towards the end of last year I completed my aim of doing six line drawings from the photos that I took. Naturally, after having done that I decided that I should concentrate on doing some drawings in Nuoro, now that I live there! 

I disegni dei palazzi a Nuoro 

Uno dei miei propositi per l’anno nuovo è stato di fare dieci disegni dei palazzi più interessanti di Nuoro prima della fine del 2012. I primi giorni della settimana ho finito il primo disegno La Cattedrale di Santa Maria della Neve e ci è voluto più tempo di quanto immaginavo. Forse dovrei essere meno ambizioso quando scelgo gli altri palazzi a Nuoro da disegnare. E’ curioso che, appena ho finito il disegno, Nuoro e la Sardegna passavano l’inverno più freddo da cinquant’anni. In questo stesso periodo la temperatura nella mia città natale, Bristol, era tra sei e undici gradi!

L’idea di questi disegni ha avuto le sue radici in qualcosa che ho deciso di fare diciotto mesi prima di arrivare a Nuoro ed abitare qui. Sono uscito per fare qualche foto di alcuni dei palazzi più interessanti nelle zone di Henbury e Brentry a Bristol, le zone dove sono cresciuto. Per la maggior parte ero inspirato dal fatto che Henbury cominciava a diventare una zona con una reputazione dei problemi con il comportamento antisociale, nonostante che la parte di Henbury vicina Blaise Castle Estate è esteticamente carina quanto le altre parti a Bristol. Suppongo che io volessi dimostrare che la zona ha qualcosa da offrire diversa dai titoli negativi nei giornali locali.

Verso la fine dell’anno scorso ho raggiunto lo scopo di fare sei disegni delle foto che ho fatto. Ovviamente, poi ho deciso che dovevo concentrarmi nel fare alcuni disegni dei palazzi a Nuoro, soprattutto perché adesso ci abito!
